Herrington Country Park

Client: City of Sunderland Council

Value: £1.2 million

Brambledown Landscape Services Ltd carried out major Land renewal works and environmental improvement works at the former Herrington Colliery site near Sunderland.

This huge and complex project comprised large scale planting of 25km of hedges, the construction of 17km of paths and bridleways, and further planting of 40ha of trees and the construction of 5ha of water features.

This, along with the thousands of trees and shrubs that were planted, made Herrington Country Park one of the largest sites (in terms of vast scale) that Brambledown Landscapes Services Ltd had undertaken. A lnew ake was also created by Brambledown along with a giant amphitheatre and boardwalks. All constructed by in house trained personel from Brambledown.

The lake attracted much wildlife back to Herrington Country Park. To think of what the site was before (a coal heap) the transormation into what is now the site of the Durham County Show is incredible, and Brambledown were awarded a National BALI (British Association of Landscape Industries) Gold Award, placing this scheme as the best in the UK for similar environmental schemes over the value of £1 millon. The scheme also included a 5 years maintenance package which Brambledown Landscapes undertook and later a play area was also added by Brambledown North East.
