Play Area Woodcarving
Stunning Woodcarving can now be viewed at Tyneview Play Area in Newcastle Upon Tyne. The work is part of a new Play Area which has been constructed mainly using wooden structures, but on a very large scale with natural surfacing and finished off by some of the most ornate woodcarvings you will find anywhere in the region.
The huge structural woodcarving pieces form the entrance to the play area as you can see below, helping Brambledown create a recreational area that will draw the attention of any passer by never mind the children who have already flocked to use the facilities.
The type of wood is important. Hardwoods are more difficult to shape but have greater luster and longevity. Softer woods may be easier to carve, but are less resistant to damage. Any wood can be carved but they all have different qualities and characteristics. The choice will depend on the requirements of carving being done: for example a detailed figure would need a wood with a fine grain and very little figure as strong figure can interfere with 'reading' fine detail. Here the trained wood sculpter has used chainsaws, chisels and other tools to create true masterpieces from various wood types, all adding to the natural look of the play area.
Brambledowns completion and handover of the park was ahead of schedule despite horrendous weather conditions back in the early part of 2010. Now that the greenery has come through in the play area, visitors can enjoy the full nature of the park.
