Gordon Brown & Cabinet meet at Durham Johnston School
Brambledown are back onsite after history was made yesterday as Prime Minister Gordon Brown and his senior ministers held a Cabinet meeting in Durham.
The meeting – the first time the Cabinet has met in the North-East and one of just a handful of times it has met outside of London – took place in the unlikely setting of a locker room at Durham Johnston School. Brambledown interrupted their works to allow extra security onto the site of the Durham Johnston School and suspended work for the day as Durham became Westminster.
The Prime Minister had earlier officially opened the school’s new building in Crossgate Moor following a £24m rebuilding programme. Then, after a series of ministerial visits across the North-East, the politicians returned to the city for yesterday afternoon’s historic meeting.
Mr Brown said: “It is a real privilege for us to be here.”
The Prime Minister Gordon Brown and senior colleagues met invited members of the public for a question-and-answer session at the school, before getting down to business behind closed doors.
Brambledown were back onsite today to continue their works to the Sports pitches which are due to be completed later this year. Works still to be completed include the construction of both artificial and synthetic sports pitches and athletics facilities by Brambledown at The Durham Johnston School. Brambledown have completed all other exterior works to the school including thousands of square metres of paving, raised planter beds, carparking, walling, fencing and planting.
Durham MP Roberta Blackman- Woods, a governor at Durham Johnston School, said: “This is a great and historic day for Durham regardless of your political standpoint. I am delighted the Cabinet chose our city to hold today’s meeting.
“The Cabinet’s North-East visit shows how committed Labour is to this region. Anyone who cares about Durham and its future must realise what a fantastic honour it is for our city for the Cabinet to meet here and for Durham schoolchildren and local residents to engage directly with Cabinet ministers.”
